Time to ensure that your graduates are engaged

Release Date: 16 March 2010

67% of graduates surveyed back in 2009 as part of research commissioned by the Inspirational Development Group claimed that they were likely to consider leaving their current employer once the economy picked up.

67% of companies who completed a survey by Impact International stated that engaging and retaining graduate talent was their greatest challenge in 2010.

This latest figure suggests that companies do recognise that they need to work to hold onto the talent that they have in their business or risk losing the graduates that they have recruited and trained to their competitors.

A report entitled “Companies at the Crossroads” based on a global survey of over 400 senior managers, primarily in major corporations across North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific, found that almost a third (30%) of those consulted felt that ‘trust' in their organisations was either low or very low, and expected to lose key people as the recovery became more certain.

StepStone Solutions' group MD Matthew Parker commented: “This research among global leaders shows that they understand the need to focus on their talent, but that greater action is needed today to create talent strategies for the future.” “Left unaddressed, these problems constitute a perfect storm for business, as the most capable employees head for the exit and fresh talent is not recruited.”

It is vital that the graduates who have been recruited during the recession are retained in the business so that the recruitment costs are not wasted. They need to feel that they are valued in the business and that the hard work that they have put in during the economic downturn has not gone unnoticed, otherwise there is a risk that they will leave in order to seek recognition elsewhere.

Here at Discovery, alongside Impact International, we have created the Open Graduate Development Programme, aimed at developing the key business skills and personal skills of the talent within your business. The emphasis on personal development helps your employees to engage with your business and to take responsibility and pride in their work.
