The Group Exercises
The exercises you will be involved in are designed to enable us to see you in
action. They are not there to catch you out. In fact, we are not really
concerned by the results, just merely how you go about dealing with the
challenges you are faced with. We are seeking to understand what your
motivations are, your driving forces, how you react under pressure and your
process when dealing with others. Remember a lot of the experiences and
emotions you experience here will be evident within your roles every day of
your life. We want to see a snap shot of you!
They are also designed to be fun. Very quickly as you get involved you will be
surprised how you react to certain situations. As well as the obvious
enjoyment, you may well learn a lot about yourself.
What we are looking for?
For the majority of graduates at this stage in their career, experience in any
particular field is limited. We assess therefore based upon inherent
competencies rather than competencies demonstrated through success and
experience in a role.
We are looking at you to demonstrate the following competencies: -
-
Ambition and drive
-
Resilience and determination
-
Focus
-
A Positive Attitude
-
Ability to get things done
-
Influencing and Persuading
-
Competitive spirit
-
Gets involved
-
Able to communicate an idea effectively
-
Analytical approach to problem solving
The Individual Interview
Your interview will take place with one or more of the senior consultants. They
will be talking to you about the day and how you may have performed in certain
areas and question your actions in others. They will also be talking to you
about what you have done to date from your CV and why you should be a Discovery
Graduate. Think about what makes you stand out and back up your answers by
drawing upon relevant experiences.
Avoid giving one word answers, they tell us nothing. Substantiate your
experiences to date by giving relevant examples and make sure you have at least
two for each competency. For example, when asked what your greatest achievement
is to date, your degree is not considered a satisfactory answer as to be here
today and qualify for the initial screening process required you to possess a
degree. Consider your responses carefully and make your answers relevant to the
questions.
We have attached some good interview advice further in this document.
Career Advice & Training
With over 15 years worth of experience within graduate recruitment the
consultants at Discovery understand the needs and desires of graduates aspiring
to become successful in their careers. As a member of the AGR (Association of
Graduate Recruiters) the consultants at Discovery are recognised as experts in
their field. We have helped thousands of graduates find the right graduate job.
During the 'Discovery Day' you will be given structured training and coaching
on how to perform at you best during an interview or assessment day with a
graduate employer. We will give you the best advice to ensure success at
interview and make sure you secure that position.
The consultants will show you how to sell yourself to an employer and provide
valuable tips and knowledge which will give you a head start over other
graduates without this information. Competition for the best jobs within the
graduate market place is fierce and you need to stand out from the crowd. We
will show you how to!
Psychometric Testing
Companies will use Psychometric testing as an alternative to the more
traditional methods of assessing the candidates' suitability for the vacancy in
question. Graduates often find the thought of Psychometric testing daunting.
"Test" implies there should be right or wrong answers. A lot of people think
that they will be caught out but let us put your mind at ease. There are no
wrong answers!
At the 'Discovery Day' we will give you a psychometric test so you know what to
expect when you go to client assessment days and interviews. This questionnaire
is designed to create a profile of your personality and establish what your
preferred behavioural style is. With this information it is possible to
establish the most suitable career choice based on your personality.
There is no preparation for a personality test, so simply answer without
thinking too much. Your first reaction is what counts. Many people think they
should answer questions in a way the employer wants - don't do it as these
questionnaires have check questions to identify candidates attempting to fake
their answers. Above all answer honestly!
Networking
Not only will the 'Discovery Day' offer you the chance to meet commercial
careers advisors and ask all the questions you have about finding a graduate
position and what to expect but you will also have the opportunity to network
with like minded graduates and learn from their experiences in the graduate
market place.
The Discovery Day acts as a forum to collect valuable information and learn
about the opportunities available to you and the chance to improve your skill
set and gain success in finding a graduate job. Discovery is here to provide
the best advice and help you get a graduate job that matches your needs and
requirements.
